Biography/History

Karl E. Schlachter (July 7, 1885 - May 25, 1937) was born in New York. He graduated from Columbia University as a civil engineer in 1905. He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey from 1912 to 1916 and then became an industrial engineer. Beginning in 1920, to the time of his death, he worked in real estate and the insurance business in Piermont, New York. Mr. Schlachter started taking photographs of railroad locomotives when he was a teenager, and continued through his lifetime. Mr. Schlachter was one of the first members of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, established in 1921, and served as a director of the New York Chapter.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consist of 956 postcard sized negatives of images of locomotives of 162 railroads in the United States, taken by Karl E. Schlachter (1885-1937) and, after 1937, by his son Karl E. Schlacter, Jr. (1924-August 1, 2017). Many of the images are of engines of the New York Central Railroad and the Erie Railroad. Note that there are no images of engines of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad.
