Abstract:

Thirteen large photographs of Cambodian and Vietnamese people. The individuals in the photographs have all been affected by the Vietnam War in some way. In addition to the Vietnam War, some of the individuals in the photographs from Cambodia were also affected by the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot.

Adam Nadel is a New York based freelance photojournalist who graduated from the University of Chicago in 1991. Since that time he has received both national and international recognition for his photographs, including two first prizes at World Press Photo. He completed a project on war and its consequences in 2010, sections of which have appeared in a number of solo museum gallery exhibitions and have been recognized by an NYFA fellowship, Pulitzer Prize nomination, a World Press Photo Award, and The Center's Project Competition First Prize. He has also been featured in a number of private gallery shows, domestically and internationally, involving subject matter such as altered vistas, transforming evironments, and shadows.

The thirteen photographs are comprised of images of individuals from Cambodia and Vietnam who were affected by the Vietnam War, either during the war or as a result of the war.

The images of the following six individuals document Cambodians, and are headshots and portraits. There are no identifiers written on the individual photographs, and they are arranged in no particular order, so that any specific knowledge concerning the individuals has come from the photographer himself. Sok Vin was a commune leader during the war and is wearing a white shirt in the photograph. Standing next to him is his wife who is wearing a pink shirt. Uy Sarin was a soldier and can be identified in the photograph as wearing a white shirt and a scarf, in front of a window. Nuon Sary was a soldier and educator and is shirtless and wearing black sunglasses in the photograph. Prak Khorn is wearing a white shirt in front of a white background. Long Tu was a waiter and can be identified as being shirtless in front of a window. Him Huy was a guard and only his face can be seen, surrounded by blackness, in the photograph.

The remaining seven photographs are of Vietnamese people affected by the Vietnam War. These photographs are likewise not identified, but identifying information has been provided by the photographer. Thoung, a 19 year old man from Da Nang, appears in the photograph wearing a white shirt and does not have eyes or eyelids. Nquyen Thi Kien, a 37 year old woman from Da Nang can be seen in a green dress sitting on the floor of her home. Tran Thi Hoa, of Hanoi, is a female veteran of the war. Wearing a black, pink, and blue patterend shirt in the photograph, she is surrounded by other Vietnamese veterans. Vo Viet Hoang is a 13 year old boy from Dong Ha and can be identified as he is wearing a white shirt and writhing on the ground. Pham Van Diep and Pham Van Duc are brothers from Da Nang and can be identified as being shirtless with scars covering their bodies. Pham Van Diep, 12, is at right, and Pham Van Duc, 10, is on the left. An untitled photograph is of a child with an abnormaly large forehead (child is out of focus) and seated in front of a tiled wall in Ho Chi Minh City. Another untitled photograph from Hanoi is of three children wearing blue shirts.
