Show moreYoung children, especially girls, work as bonded (slave) laborers in Orissa, India. They are taken from their families and forced to work 12-16 hours a day, 7 days a week. These children do not have access to school. Many of these children have been trafficked from other areas where their parents have been forced to either sell them into debt bondage (slavery) or are dependent on the meager wages that these children can provide. Any pay they do receive falls well below minimum levels required by law. Child workers are chronically tired from long hours and irregular rest, increasing probability of disease and malnutrition.
