Included is a report of the production of James Weldon Johnson’s “God’s Trombones,” and descriptions of performances by The Descendants, Norman Connors Rhythm Experience, and Jon Lucien. There is an article about the condition of the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature and History at the New York Public Library. Also featured is an interview with poet Sonia Sanchez, an article examining the state of Afro-American historiography, and two pieces by Nathaniel Bracey. There is a poem by Lois Coleman, a piece of short fiction by Steve Fortes, and an article on Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. In addition, this issue contains international news from the Caribbean and South Africa, as well as a statement by the Coal Commission of the Communist Party and the West Virginia Communist Party concerning the anti-textbook protest in Kanawha County schools.
