Show moreThis issue of Contact from January, 1976 features a speech given by Dr. Sydney Estes, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction for Atlanta Public Schools, at the Ethnic Studies Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. In reaction to Bicentennial celebrations, this issue also includes an article calling for the recognition of black contributions to American history, as well as a piece detailing the plight of US minorities. In addition, there is information about the case of Robert Earl Brown and Craemen Gethers; a petition to have the art show, “Three Centuries of American Art,” at the Whitney Museum of American Art cancelled because of its omission of black artists; and an article about the history of federal laws regarding marijuana. This issue also contains a list of events in observance of Afro-American History Week at UConn, an editorial by Violette Haldane about the selection process of articles for Contact, and a review of the film “Mahogany.” Additionally, there is an interview with Agostinho Neto, president of Angola; a tribute to the actor and activist Paul Robeson; and an announcement of the upcoming Symposium of the Afro-American Studies Department of the University of Pennsylvania, co-sponsored by the Institute of the Black World.
