China’s attitude toward the U.S. is no a function of their family quarrels,'Kirsch said, ‘their pos- ture toward the U.S. is determin- ed by their attitude toward the Soviets.’
In an obituary of the Chinese leader’s life United Press Interna- tional said
No other world leader had ever dominated a nation and it's people as Mao Tse-tung did in communist China. His ‘Quota- tions from Chairman Mao’ or the ‘little red book’,as it is known in the west. had probably been read by more than any other book in history. save the Bible. His portraits adorned every offece and schoolroom, and public place in China.
The cult of his personality was even more pervading than that of Josef Stalin in the Soviet Union in the 1920's. 30's, and 40's. School children were taught to sing‘; ‘Mother -is dear, father is dear, but Chairman Mao is dearer.‘ In a society where the father had been the central quthority in the family. Mao was the father all of Communist China.
For all the power he possessed as the leader of the most populous nation on earth. he had a rather ordinary appearance.

serious rioting just five months ago, and began paying tribute to the man who was the only leader they had known since the Peoples Republic of China canie into being on Oct. 1. 1949, after Mao's forces drove Chiang Kai-shek from the mainland.
Peking reports said great throngs of young people, many of them in tears, entered the square and stood in front of a huge portrait of the chairman where they raised their clenched fists
and took oaths: “Beloved Chairman Mao, we
commit ourselves to continue the struggle, always according to
your teachings.” A single green, flowered
wreath- was placed on the Martyrs Monument in the center
of the square, which bears an inscription in Mao's calligraphy reading, “The People's Heroes are Immortal.”
Reportsof Trouble
There were some reports of trouble in the area. However, sources reached by telephone in Peking said the only sign of disorder they saw was a brief scuffle between two youths. This did not appear to be politically motivated, they said.
The Italian news agency ANSA said stores in Wan Fuchin, Pek- ing’s main shopping street, stay- ed open and people lined up to buy large portraits of Mao and white paper flowers of mourning. They also bought wooden boards, steel wire and silk to make wreaths.
