Three press conferences trying to explain how the team will play are over. Tomorrow. the University of Connecticut football will get its first opportunity to see how really good (or bad) it will be. The opening test for the UConn gridders comes tomorrow afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium in Hamilton, N.Y. as the Huskies meet Colgate University. The Red Raiders of Coach Fred Dunlap. who moved over to New York from Lehigh about six months ago. will most likely show Larry Naviaux's team the Wing T offense. which Naviaux and his staff taught Dunlap while he was still at the Pennsylvania school. While UConn will have the advantage of lining up against a quite familiar offense on the other side of the ball. inexperience in the Husky secondary may cause a problem. if Colgate quarterback Bob Relph can connect with talented wide receiver Keith Polito. 'Polito is a good receiver with excellent speed.’ Naviaux said earlier this week. ‘He's one good ballplayer, he can really fly.’ UConn's defensive backfield will consist of freshman Darrell Wilson at right cornerback. with sophomores Ted Walton and Steve Rose at left corner and strong safety, respectively. Junior Herb DeGraffe, a starter most of last season. will hold down the free safety position. ‘Walton and Wilson have good speed.’ Naviaux said. ‘but we need to find out how they will do against another team.’ Naviaux will also be using the game to test his new. more wide open offense. The major reason for the team's dramatic change in attitude a- ccording to O'Neil is that “We are separating the players from the guys who just want to party." Last season the team had a very deceptive 7-3 record for the squad lost to every ‘quality team they played but This season they feel the)’ Can Win these matches with “"9 play from juniors Bob emu. vin and Bert Nelson and senior Jeff Gorton. By MARLA ROMASH in the sweltering heat of mid- July the upcoming University of Pennsylvania (Penn) soccer sea- son did not look bright. In the cooler days of September the picture has darkened for Penn Head Coach Robert Seddon as his team prepares to meet UConn in the Huskie's last pre-season match tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Storrs. According to UConn assistant soccer coach Ben Brewster. UConn fans attending Saturday's scrimmage will see a team ready for the upcoming season, a team with a great deal of poise and experience: The 1976 UConn varsity soccer team. Saturday's scrimmage will pro- vide a good example of what's to come in the 1976 season. Probable starters for the Huskies will be newly elected co-captains forward Jim Evans and defense- man Paul Hunter. Junior goalie Bob Ross, due to his previous varsity experience. sems to have the edge in gaining the starting position over sophomore Tom Krug. The other seven returning sen- iors. Lance Deckman, Don Feh- linger. Joe Lynch. Louis Magno. Steve Miller. Jeff Parent, and Paul Hunter, tailback Nick Giaquinto. The new offense will also open up a regular spot in the offensive backfield for multi-talented Darryl Schwartz. who maybe the best blocker on the UConn squad. Naviaux predicted earlier this week that the Red Raiders would most likely attempt to open up the UConn defense by moving out of the Wing T and into drop back action plays. Colgate dropped a 24-6 decision to Penn in a scrimmage last Saturday, and Dunlap acknowledged ‘the team still has a lot of work to do. ' Dunlap had orginally announced that senior Jim Russell would open at quarterback, but said he switched to Relph based on the duo's performances in the scrimmage with Penn. The key to Dunlap’s attack will be the running of junior halfback Henry White and Junior Pat Healy at fullback. White, at 5'9” and 174 lbs., is a quick, fleet runner, and the 6’, 198 lbs. Healy is the man Colgate will go to in short yardage situations,,_ The game is a key battle for UConn, a a loss would put the team in an early season slump similiar to the one which occured last year after the thumping by Navy in the opener. By all accounts, the Huskies seem to be ready. Naviaux said the team is confident. loose, and are in no means looking past this week to next Saturday's home opener against Navy. With an extremely tough first half schedule, and an extremely big need for a confidence-restoring win, UConn could do well to come with a victory. ‘We're still undefeated now,’ Naviaux said,‘and Saturday we find out how good we really are.’ As is to be expected, the number of talented players the Huskies possess exceeds the 11 men permitted on the field at one time. Brewster said it will be “really tough" to choose what combina- tion of players will open the game for the Huskies. "We have a lot of tough veter- ans in addition to having a lot of really good young players," Brewster said. Head coach Joe Morrone said the Huskies will be relying on 18 to 20 men to provide his team with the quick pace, high pres- sure. style of play that has been so sucessful for his team in the past. For Penn the situation is not as bright. Seddon has lost a large part of his defensive strength and is presently experimenting with the players he has, attempting. to come up with a winning combina- tion. Defensive strongmen missing from the Penn roster are All-Ivy backs Floria Kempf, Carlos Cara. and Tim Mazzetti. in an attempt to fill the gap created by the absences of these men Seddon will be playing senior letterman HankGraef as a back rather than in his usual slot as goalkeeper. Also on defense for Penn will be Jim Evans named soccer co-captains Senior lettermen Jim Evans and Paul Hunter will be co-captains of the 1976 UConn varsity soccer team. Evans and Hunter were elected as captains by their teammates Thursday afternoon following the Huskies scrimmage with Trinity College. Evans. a forward on the UConn team, led the team in points earned for shots. goals, and assists during the 1975 season. A combinations of nine goals and four assists gave the Simsbury native a total of 14 points. Evans’ stellar performance dur- ing the i975 season earned him a number of post season honors. He earned All New England. All New England lnteroollegiate Soc- cer League (NEISL), and All Yankee Conference in addition to being named on the NEISL All Star game roster. Hunter was the only member of the 1975 squad to gain All American Honors during the 1975 season based on his strong per- formances as back for the Husk- ies. Hunter was part of the 1975 defense that had only a .95 goals against average. The Westport native also reveiv- ed honors as All New England. All NEISL and All Yankee Con- ference. Hunter also received a spot in the NElSL All Star Game. Hunter also received the Dr. John Y. Squires Award for Most Vaulable Player during the 1975 season. Both Evans and Hunter played an important role in the Huskies successful l6-3-3 season in 1975. in the upcoming season both Evans and Hunter are expected to continue providing the Huskies with strong performances. The UConn booters open their schedule against the University of Bridgeport the evening of Sep- tember 15 in Bridgeport. Paul Toomey. a schoolboy standout from Coventry will be playing sweeper back with Staples High School star Pete Dickstein helping out in the fullback position. "Toomey is a tough player. He is going to be tough on Evans and Nevers. I wouldn't want to play against him." Seddon said. Seddon called his offense “snakelike. moving to fill spaces quickly". His biggest concern Saturday is that his team doesn't “burn out" against the Huskies. As for UConn. they are tuning up for their season opener Sep- tember 15 against the University of Bridgeport. Seddon stresses the positive attitude his team holds-however, it might take more than a positive attitude to defeat the Huskies. Williams, a graduate of Lee High School in New Haven, reportedly signed a letter of intent in April to attend the Providence school, but has apparently changed his mind and and has enrolled at the University of Rhode Island. ‘lt’s bizarre to say the least,’ Gavitt said. ‘There’s nothing we can do but just wish him luck.’ Jack Kraft, head coach at URI said he didn’t know about the shift until Tuesday afterfnoon. ‘I was as pleased now as I was disappointed in April when he decided not to come here,’ Kraft said. Kraft said that no one con- nected with the basketball program tried to get Wlllliams to chan e his mind since April.
