This issue of UConn Free Press, published in the Spring of 2013, covers the topic of drug use and regulation in the United States. Authors argue for the positive mental health aspects of drugs, as well as the idea that legalization allows for more effective safety measures to be introduced in drug production and use. The issue is highly critical of the war on drugs, citing large expenditures for little effect. Additionally, the criminal justice system is cited as being overly harsh on nonviolent drug offenders, the poor, and minorities. Substances discussed in this issue include marijuana, MDMA, and psilocybin mushrooms. Also present is an article discussing the opium wars, bringing light to the close ties between corporations and drug money.
