Roach, the publication aimed to “provide a forum for the expression of serious radical political and social comment.” Roach was one of the faculty leaders of anti-war and anti-recruitment protests at UConn in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His involvement in activist demonstrations meant that he often came up against university administration and the law, and he was arrested multiple times. A catalyst for the creation of The Husky Handjob was Roach’s arrest following his role in a student demonstration against recruitment for the Dow Chemical Corporation. Highly satirical and anti-authority, the publication illuminates the tensions in 1969 between protesters and university administrators and gives a window onto the undercurrent of social activism at UConn in the late 1960s.
