The Avon Newsletter ~ June 1944


Private George L. Fournier died in the South Pacific on April 25, 1944 of wounds received in action. -- Purple Heart recipient.


Private Gordon H. Tetreault was killed in Italy on May 19th in action. -- Avon had a big Memorial Day Parade. -- The Honor Roll had to be rebuilt to add the 240+ names of those now in service to either side. -- Secret Lake dedicated its own honor roll for past service men in the military (20).


Leonard LaMonica promoted to Private First Class.


Emmett Wiese received his stripes in the Navy.


Cpl. Robert Starr was promoted to Staff Sgt.


Women firefighters of Secret Lake held down a fire under control for three hours until a pumper and crew could completely extinguish it.


Edmund LaRock died at a Veterans’ hospital in New York City. He was a World War I veteran and member of the Yankee Division Club.


The newsletter includes the War Records for the men and women in the military in Avon and lists their known name, rank, service, section, and location. -- Stresses the importance of filling out the blue cards included with the newsletter, not only for including information into the newsletter, but for information in regards to processing their discharge papers later on. - Army takes over the Avon Old Farm School: Army rehabilitation school for the blind to be opened at Avon for American soldiers who lose their sight in combat will be prepared for a return to active civilian life. -- Only such school in the country. -- 200 men -- War Department School headed by Colonel Frederick Thorne.


The Newsletter included instructions for soldiers on how to vote away from home while enlisted.
