Barnum from Rembrandt Peale dated to October 25, 1854. Written on blue paper. Rembrandt Peale was the son of Charles Willson Peale, and helped his father to run the Peale Museum in Philadelphia and later Baltimore. This museum is considered one of the first public museums in the United States of America, and when opening his American Museum, Barnum purchased a large portion of the Peale collection. P.T. Barnum wrote a large number of letters in his time, and as a public figure, received many in return. These manuscripts offer insight into his personal life via correspondence with friends and family, his business interests including the American Museum and the circus, and his personality. The various correspondents demonstrate how vast his social circle was, and the space he occupied as a public figure during his own lifetime. Show less
