The Avon Newsletter ~ May 1945 Lieut. John C. Moriarty was killed in action in Germany on April 8th. He was promoted to First Lieutenant in February. He received the Purple Heart, received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, received the Bronze Star. - Anthony Rotondo was promoted to Tech. Sgt. - Robert LaRock was promoted to Sgt. - Pvt. Ralph Fahr was awarded the Bronze Star. - PFC William Smith was awarded the Bronze Star. - S/Sgt. Herman Kruse received an Oak Leaf cluster for his Air Medal. - PFC Ralph Roberts received the Purple Heart. - Pvt. Paul Gerchman received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. - PFC John Zanolli received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. - Cpl. Paul Farken received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. - The Ensign-Bickford Co. is proudly displaying its third Army-Navy “E” flag which was awarded when production for the government is kept to an established high standard. - The United States Signal Corps had announced plans to film activities at the Old Farms Convalescent Hospital to better acquaint the public with the type of training blinded soldiers of this war were receiving and show in vivid form the abilities of these men. -- Film under the direction of Capt. Skinner, S.C. -- Swimming pool under way at Old Farms Convalescent Hospital for blinded soldiers for use all year round. -- $70,000 in funds raised so far by Connecticut residents. - Col. Myron Gold was, as far as it was known, Avon’s highest ranking officer. - Arne Magnuson had been promoted to A.M.M. 2/c. - PFC Walter I. Tallmadge of the Marine Corps was awarded the Purple Heart (Image Included). - Avon surpassed all other Valley towns in the clothing drive, collecting over 9,000 pounds. - First Lieut. Ruth A. Thompson in the Army Nurse Corps. was authorized to wear the American Theater and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon. - Alexander Longhi promoted to Sergeant. - Harry Silver promoted from Technical Corporal to Sergeant. - Lietu. Ann Longhi was Assistant Supervisor in a hospital in France. - Leonard LaMonica was promoted from Private First Class to Corporal. - Paul Gerchman was promoted to Private First Class. - Sgt. Harry Silver, who came upon a dying German soldier, asked him if he would like a priest. The German replied, “Hitler is my priest.” Harry said, “Hang on a bit. I’ll get him for you.” - James H.
