Description
Letter addressed from Pittsburgh, with a stamped postmark including the date, for 50 cents postage. The paper is stained with red wax residue where it was sealed. William Gay Butler writes to his father Jonathan Butler in West Hartford and encloses a draft for $870. He got to Williamsburg as soon as he expected, but as John Boyd was obliged to go on to Carlisle, 120 miles away, as a witness to a special court, William had to stay with the store until his return and could not travel on to Pittsburgh as soon as he intended. He purchased the draft from Mssrs. Royer and Schmucker? (or Schumacher) through on agent in Pittsburgh, not wanting to send money by mail. He had requested Mssrs. R. Miller Jr. and Co. to send a draft to Jonathan, "but they being so unfortunate as to meet with a quite a material axident tharefore it was delayed till this time." William says he was surprised to find it still unpaid but was unable to get it any sooner. He has sold as many goods out of his wagon as expected, and the store has done very well since he last left it for Connecticut, gaining credit and custom. William sold his wagon the day before he got home for $45. He starts in the morning for Meadville and Erie, PA, and will write with more particular details in a few days. He received a letter from his brother Epaphras Butler dated July 24 and one from his sister Maria and her husband George Wells dated July 27; they were all well. William writes that Jonathan can redeem the draft for cash at the Hartford Bank, and asks him to apologize to Mr. Pratt for the delay. He says he will not fail to have a draft in time to meet the $200 due. He writes that he will also send two drafts to New York that day.
