Description
A small booklet entitled Life of P.T. Barnum that was packaged with Duke's Cigarettes. The cover of the booklet features a full color bust of P.T. Barnum, and looks similar to other depictions of P.T. with him looking off slightly to the side. In elaborate font around him is the title of the little book. The inside cover features an ad for Duke's Cigarettes, before the title page appears. Within the text is a very broad re-telling of P.T. Barnum's life. The text is not drawn from his autobiography, Struggles and Triymphs, but contains his basic life story from being a man of humble beginings in Bethel, Connecticut, to owning the American Museum to having his fantastic circus. It also includes brief overviews of Barnum's time in jail, his first success with Joice Heth, and Barnum's later good fortune with Charles S. Stratton (General Tom Thumb). The focus is ultimately on not only Barnum's life being interesting, but successful. The last page features a listing of other biographies that are packed into DUke's Cigarettes, and include Buffalo Bill and Mark Twain. On the back of the booklet is an Asiastic elephant with riders, against the backdrop of a circus tent. Printed by Knapp and Company, lithographers and printers, Park Place, N.Y.
