Description
Letter addressed from Philadelphia and sent with no postage by Hiram Roberts. The paper is torn and red wax residue remains where it was sealed. William Gay Butler writes to his father Jonathan Butler in West Hartford about his business peddling wares near Philadelphia. He received a letter from Jonathan informing him of his ill health, but writes that his own health is good. He returned to the city Sunday morning from an excursion lasting six weeks. Most of the time the weather was bad and the traveling was rough. From March 1 to March 15 the weather was pleasant and the roads improved, but then it snowed again for several days. He writes that the farmers had begun plowing but had to stop again when the weather turned, and that they hire all the best hands from the beginning of April for five or six months, at $5 or $6 per month. William writes that he traded about $600 worth of goods but made little profit. He broke several parts on his wagon, and in the end made about $120 and his expenses amounted to about $60. He expects to set out again on April 10 or 12 and make two more trips, returning to the city at the beginning of July and reaching home by July 10. William asks Jonathan to write to him about May 20 so he will have a letter waiting when he returns to Philadelphia. He has not heard anything further from his brother Epaphras Butler, and asks his father to inform Aaron Cadwell and Jay Mond that John Mayer of Harrisburg died suddenly around March 10. William closes the letter by mentioning he saw missionaries of the Osage Mission in Harrisburg around March 15 or 18, "agoing on to the west."
