Description
Joy M. Starry Turner (1939-2005) was an internationally recognized Montessori educator and the founder and administrator of Montessori Greenhouse Schools, Los Alamitos and Garden Grove (1970), and Montessori Western Teacher Training Program (1973) with her husband, Charles C. Turner. She served on the Board of Directors of the AMS from 1979 to 1985, and became instrumental in establishing uniform standards for Montessori teacher education in the United States, first as President of the Accreditation Council for Childhood Education Specialist Schools (ACCESS) (1985-1989) and then as President and later Executive Director of the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) (1991-1996). She also served as the editor of Montessori Life, the quarterly journal of the AMS (1989-2004). The items includes writings by her on aspects of Montessori teacher training and education, and correspondence to and from her when she served on the Board of Directors of the AMS.
