Description
Photograph taken by Francis D. Donovan, accompanying this caption: "In 1929, the Eastman Kodak Co. gave a free 128 Vest Pocket camera to any child who had a 12th birthday in that year. I got my camera on my 12th birthday and this is one of the first pictures I took with it -- Engine 3018 with the East Walpole - Providence freight, westbound on the Wrentham Branch at Winter Street, South Walpole. I rode in the cab of this engine many times with Engineer Arthur Rix. It was cold in winter and hot in summer." [Note that the Kodak camera giveaway was actually done from May 1-May 31, 1930, and was meant for children who turned 12 that year. Despite writing that he received the camera on his 12th birthday we know that could not have been possible because Francis Donovan was born on June 29, 1917. He was 12 years old in May 1930 so it is supposed that the local camera shop owner did young Mr. Donovan a favor by giving him the camera although he didn't technically fulfill the terms of the giveaway.]
