Description
Llarge Tulare bottle basket with a flat base, flaring sides, a contracting parellel shelf and a bottle mouth and rim. Reed coil construction. Basic color is dark tan. Decorated with quail feathers and a polychromatic diamondback rattlesnake design. A few quail feathers are missing. Attached tag reads: "Tulare Bottle Neck - rarest of Tulare Indian possessions. Made of willow. The colored willow is from the red bird bush. Design is rattlesnake. Feathers taken from the top knot of the quail, only one feather in a (per) bird. It taking 43 birds to complete the basket. It is a treaure(d) basket among the Tulare and is seldom parted with. Age 50 years ! (approx. 1906 at the time) Tulare Cal."
