Description
Booklet featuring Zeo the Air Queen and an advertisement for Pond's Extract. On the front, printed in red and black ink, is an image of Zeo herself. She is carried along a line by a pulley, with her hair tied to said pulley. She wears a red performance outfit, and on the left is text that reads Zeo and on the right there is text that reads Air Queen. A decorative red and black fleur-de-lis border surrounds her. A brief description of her act is given on the opposite side, and is flanked by an intensely decorated black and white border. The last two pages are advertisements for Pond's Extract which is said to be good for all kinds of sprains, burns, scalds, hoarseness, and other ailments. The last page shows an image of what a container of Pond's Extract looks like as well as customer testimonials. Pond's still exists today, specializing in health care and beauty products. In contrast, additional information beyond Zeo's involvement with P.T. Barnum's circuses remains unknown. Barnum is best known for his involvement with the circus that bore his name, but his circus ventures came about when he was in his 60s. The first show was called P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan and Circus. Railroads propelled the circus to success, making it easier to reach a number of locations, and the intake was significant. Barnum then opened the New York Hippodrome with similar acts. In the 1880s, he encountered competition from other circuses. A merger between Barnum's show and the Great London Show of Cooper, Bailey, and Hutchinson formed the Barnum and London Circus. Negotiations in 1887 formed the Barnum and Bailey circus. The name remained until 1919 when it became the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. It came to an end in May 2017 when the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus ceased performances after 146 years.
