Description
The Seaside Institute was a building designed by Warren R. Briggs on behalf of the Warner Brothers Corset Company, not far from Seaside Park. This building, dedicated in 1887 by Frances Cleveland, President Grover Cleveland's wife, was built to both house and enrich the lives of the female employees of Warner Brothers. The institute was meant to provide educational opportunities in the form of a reading room and library, as well as evening classes and recreation in the form of a concert hall and pianos located in the building. Seaside Park itself was built in part thanks to the donation of land by P.T. Barnum and other Bridgeport residents starting in 1864 and expanding in the 1880s. It still hosts locals and tourists alike today, and is the home of the P.T. Barnum statue designed by Thomas Ball and approved of by Barnum himself.
