Description
Letter addressed from Huntingdon, PA, nine miles from Wiliamsburg, and sent from the Water St. post office with no postmark for 25 cents postage. The paper is stained with red wax residue where it was sealed. William Gay Butler writes to his father Jonathan Butler in West Hartford about his business partner John Boyd traveling to Connecticut. Boyd set out with William's large wagon and six small young horses, intending to sell them on the road or when he arrives in Hartford in 18 or 20 days. William writes that he has sent a long letter to Jonathan by Boyd's hand, and Boyd can give him a more particular account of their business. William has been in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Fort George, York on Lake Ontario, Brownhelm, Detroit, and Canada. George Wells traveled with him from Brownhelm, and his family is all well in Ohio and enjoying plenty of Farmer's Fair. George and William's sister Maria's son George Butler Wells is 8 months old and weighs 21 lbs. They had received a letter from William's brother Epaphras, who plans to come out to Ohio the next fall. William directs Jonathan to tell Lidy Kelsey that they stayed with her sister Nancy one night and saw A. Addams, Jasper Peck, Merriman Barber, Horace Cadwell, Noah Burr, Old Mr. Ford, and many other Connecticut people.
