Description
Letter addressed from Hagerstown, MD, and sent by the hand of Mr. Foster of Canton, CT. The paper is torn and stained with wax residue where it was sealed. William Gay Butler writes to his father Jonathan Butler in West Hartford on gaining an opportunity to send a letter by private conveyance. William writes that he received a letter from Hiram Roberts dated May 5 informing him he was at Jonathan's house and the family expected a letter from him by the hand of Mr. Bement. Mr. Bement was ill and delayed at Philadelphia 6 or 8 days longer than expected, but was to leave May 2. William has been selling goods for 14 days and has sold $800 worth. He obtained a license to sell goods in Maryland in company with Mr. D. N. Camp, and plans to be in the state 10 days and then travel over the mountains to Pittsburgh. He will write to Hiram Roberts on arriving there and stay 20 days. William has not received any letter from his sister Maria and her husband George Wells since writing last, but expects to on reaching Greensburg. William asks his father to inform Hiram Roberts on his receipt of the letter.
